While combining particular drugs can prove to be a pleasurable experience for people, in some instances it can be highly dangerous. It should also be stated that different people will respond differently to different drugs and drug combinations, and the same person can have a different response on different occasions.
The table below provides a summary of some known drug combinations and possible implications.
Amphetamine Type Substance |
Combined with |
Equals |
Amphetamines |
Adderall |
Can increase the risk of heatstroke, hypertension, heart attack and death. This combination may also increase the risk of brain (nerve) damage.
Alcohol |
Can increase blood pressure, and heart rate, increasing risk of heart attack.
ARV (Antiretrovirals) |
Can increase toxicity leading to fatality
Atropine |
Can lead to increased body temperature and disturbances of heart rhythm
Cocaine |
Risk of heatstroke, hypertension, heart attack and death. This combination may also increase the risk of brain (nerve) damage.
GHB |
Amphetamine can allow a much larger dose of GHB to be consumed, however as the dose of amphetamine subsides an overdose of GHB can occur.
MAOI Anti-depressants |
Can result in severe hypertensive crisis (very high blood pressure)
MDMA |
Risk of heatstroke, hypertension, heart attack and death. This combination may also increase the risk of brain (nerve) damage.
MDMA |
Amphetamines |
Risk of heatstroke, hypertension, heart attack and death. This combination may also increase the risk of brain (nerve) damage.
Alcohol |
There have been some unexplained deaths associated with mixing alcohol and MDMA. This combination can produce bizarre behavior, and memory loss. Alcohol can also compound dehydration and make your comedown last longer.
Antihistamines |
May enhance or interfere with MDMA effect.
ARV (Antiretrovirals) |
Can increase toxicity leading to fatality
Atropine |
Can lead to increased body temperature and disturbances of heart rhythm
Birth control medications |
MDMA can cause vomiting and nausea which may cause you to vomit up birth control medication.
Cannabis |
A small amount of cannabis used prior to taking MDMA may reduce nausea and anxiety.
Cocaine |
Cocaine competes with MDMA and can actually blunt the effect of MDMA, however there have been a number of deaths attributed to combining cocaine and MDMA.
Caffeine
Ephedra
Pseudoephedrine
Can increase risk of heart attack, stroke and heatstroke. |
DXM (Dextromethorphan) |
This is a dangerous combination that interferes with perception of body heat and can contribute to brain (nerve) damage.
GHB |
MDMA can allow a much larger dose of GHB to be consumed, however as the dose of MDMA subsides an overdose of GHB can occur. Mixing GHB and alcohol is also a particularly dangerous combination that can lead to overdose and death.
Heroin and other opiates
MDMA's effects may mask opiate effects of heroin and make overdose easier |
LSD |
Taken simultaneously can produce a stronger effect of both drugs.
MAOI Anti-depressants |
Can result in severe hypertensive crisis (high blood pressure) or ‘serotonin syndrome’
Psilocybin (mushrooms) |
Taken simultaneously can produce a stronger effect of both drugs.
SSRI Anti depressants(Prozac, Zoloft) |
SSRI’s taken prior to MDMA may reduce the effect of MDMA. Use of MDMA prior to taking SSRI’s however can lead to brain (nerve) damage.
Viagra |
Can cause priapism (where penis remains erect after sexual stimulation ceases) which can be very painful and can cause permanent damage to your penis.
Cocaine |
Alcohol |
Can mask depressant effects of alcohol. Can increase blood pressure, tension and jitters. The body converts the broken-down products of alcohol and cocaine into cocaethylene, a chemical more deadly than cocaine, which increases the risk of overdose.
Amphetamines |
Risk of heatstroke, hypertension, heart attack and death. This combination may also increase the risk of brain (nerve) damage.
ARV (Antiretrovirals) |
Can cause increased liver-toxicity and overdose.
Heroin or opiates |
Increased risk of disturbed heart rhythm and possible heart failure. Cocaine will mitigate possible overdose effects of heroin while active, however the cocaine will wear off more quickly than the heroin leaving the user vulnerable to heroin overdose.
MAOI Anti-depressants |
Can result in severe hypertensive crisis
MDMA |
Cocaine competes with MDMA and can actually blunt the effect of MDMA, however there have been a number of deaths attributed to combining cocaine and MDMA.
